Extracurricular stipends are almost always set as a flat lump sum rather than an hourly wage, which makes them easy to underestimate in terms of true time cost. Coaches and activity leaders often only count the visible time (the training session or rehearsal itself) and forget preparation, equipment setup, travel to fixtures, and communication with parents or students, all of which count as real hours worked. Dividing the stipend by the honest total of all hours spent gives a comparable effective hourly rate that can be weighed against a teacher's base rate, casual/CRT rates, or simply against whether the time would be better spent elsewhere.
