Grade / Mark Percentage Calculator
Grading
Percentage = (Marks ÷ Total) × 100 Australian university standard bands:
HD (High Distinction): 85–100% · D (Distinction): 75–84% · C (Credit): 65–74% · P (Pass): 50–64% · F (Fail): 0–49%
School bands vary by state. NSW uses A–E; VIC uses A–F with numerical descriptors.

1 What this calculator does

Converts raw marks to percentages, calculates the raw score needed to achieve a target percentage, and breaks results into grade bands. Enter marks scored and total marks available for instant percentage and letter grade.

2 Formula & professional reasoning

Percentage = (Marks scored ÷ Total marks) × 100 | Required marks = (Target % ÷ 100) × Total marks

The percentage formula is the foundation of all academic assessment. Converting to percentage standardises results across assessments of different total marks. Grade bands then apply institution-specific cutoffs. The reverse calculation (how many marks needed) is useful for students understanding what they need in a final exam.

Basic
Mark to percentage
Given: 34 out of 50 marks
Working: (34 ÷ 50) × 100
Answer: 68%
💡 In the C+ / Credit band in most Australian frameworks.
Standard
What mark do I need?
Given: Need 75% to pass honours band · Test is out of 80
Working: (75 ÷ 100) × 80 = 60 marks
Answer: Need 60 out of 80
💡 Student currently has 55 — needs 5 more marks to clear the threshold.
Advanced
Weighted assessment
Given: Assignment (40%): 72% · Exam (60%): 68%
Working: (0.40 × 72) + (0.60 × 68) = 28.8 + 40.8
Answer: 69.6% overall
💡 Use the Weighted Grade Calculator for multi-component assessments.

4 Sanity check

AU grade bands (typical)
HD≥85, D 75–84, C 65–74, P 50–64, F<50
Exact cutoffs vary by school and institution — verify against your local policy.
US grade bands (typical)
A≥90, B 80–89, C 70–79, D 60–69, F<60
Some schools use A+ above 97% — check your institution.
Rounding
Round to one decimal place minimum
Rounding from 49.4% to 49% (fail) vs 49.6% to 50% (pass) — document your rounding policy.
Moderation
Check class mean after grading
Class mean below 55% or above 75% often triggers moderation review.

5 Common errors

ErrorCauseConsequenceFix
Swapping numerator and denominator Dividing total by score Percentage > 100% Score ÷ Total × 100 — always divide the smaller by the larger for standard assessments
Using percentage points as weight Treating 40% weighted assessment as 40 marks Incorrect final grade Multiply each component's percentage result by its weight, then sum
Not communicating rounding policy Omission Student disputes at borderline grades State your rounding policy on the assessment rubric before marking
Including unearned marks Marking bonus questions into total Scale distorted Decide up-front whether bonus marks are included in the denominator
