Infusion Time & Volume

Three-way infusion calculator — find time remaining, total volume or flow rate from any two known values. Free nursing calculator for infusion time & volume. AU a...

Three bags in, the patient asks how much longer — and the shift coordinator wants the board updated. Two numbers in, one answer out.

Infusion Time & Volume
IV Fluids
2 L = 2000 mL
Volume = Rate × Time Rate = Volume ÷ Time Time = Volume ÷ Rate Example: 2000 mL at 160 mL/hr → 2000÷160 = 12.5 hrs
⚕️ Clinical safety: 🇦🇺 Verify with facility drug formulary and senior clinician · Meets AHPRA/ACSQHC standards

1 What this calculator does

A three-way IV calculator: find time remaining from volume and rate, find total volume from rate and time, or find the required flow rate from volume and time. Choose your mode and enter two known values.

2 Formula & professional reasoning

Volume = Rate × Time | Rate = Volume ÷ Time | Time = Volume ÷ Rate

All three variables are linked by the fundamental flow relationship. The mode toggle selects which variable is the unknown. Results in mL/hr are directly pumpable; time results display as hours and minutes for clear handover documentation.

3 Worked examples

⚠️ Illustrative example only — not clinical or professional instruction.

Basic
Find time remaining
Given: 2000 mL remaining · 160 mL/hr
Working: 2000 ÷ 160 = 12.5 hrs
Answer: 12 hrs 30 min
💡 Document expected completion time on the fluid chart.
Standard
Find volume delivered
Given: 100 mL/hr · 6.5 hours
Working: 100 × 6.5 = 650 mL
Answer: 650 mL
💡 Useful for retrospective fluid balance documentation.
Advanced
Find required pump rate
Given: 3000 mL · 20 hours ordered
Working: 3000 ÷ 20 = 150 mL/hr
Answer: 150 mL/hr
💡 Confirm pump is set to exactly 150 mL/hr to stay on schedule.

4 Sanity check

Common IV rates
50–250 mL/hr for most adult infusions
Rates outside this range warrant a second check of the order.
Time cross-check
Multiply rate × time — should equal volume
A quick mental multiplication confirms all three values are consistent.
Blood product alert
Must complete within 4 hours of issue
If rate × remaining time > 4 hrs, re-check transfusion order.
Paediatric alert
Rates often 1–20 mL/hr
Always verify paediatric rates with a second nurse.

5 Common errors

ErrorCauseConsequenceFix
Mixing mL and L Volume entered as litres instead of mL Result 1000× wrong Always convert to mL before entering (2 L = 2000 mL)
Using total bag volume instead of remaining Bag started mid-shift Calculated time is too long Always measure or estimate remaining volume, not original bag size
Rate vs ordered rate confusion Pump was adjusted mid-infusion Time calculation based on wrong rate Read current pump display, not the original order
Ignoring boluses A bolus was given mid-infusion Volume balance is wrong Subtract any bolus volumes from remaining total
